Your Seattle

January 2009

This is a song about separation. I wrote the guitar line while fooling around during the Seattle trip. The rest of it came after I got back, with the help of a few IPAs.

So there you go, we're all thinking you're the lucky one
Crossing paths into the dark of night
And those blinding days
Float you like a stone across the desert
With miles to go before you sleep

Where is your Seattle?
Where is your Seattle?
Have you found your Seattle?
Maybe you're no longer here, but don't forget
That you are not alone

In a cool night rain, walking streets with your guitar
You find there's still kindness in this world
And together you will go
Across the bridge and up the coast
Until the fog surrounds you

Where is your Seattle?
Where is your Seattle?
Have you found your Seattle?
Maybe you're no longer here, but don't forget
That you are not alone

And see those waves, they eat away the very edge
Of the continent. Tectonics will be damned
So they rise and fall in a rhythm after all
Coming back with all these memories
In on your arms

Where is your Seattle?
Have you found your Seattle?
Do you believe in your Seattle?
And nothing is too far away
No matter if you go or stay, you're not alone
